Why is cultural literacy so important?
Its just as important as reading and writing literacy.
Cultural literacy is very important because it broadens the minds on individuals, and gives them alternative perspectives on people and things that are different from themselves. It opens the doors for people to engage in a culture other than their own and come up with varying similarities and differences between the the two. Cultural differences gives individuals the opportunity to alleviate ignorance and grant them a better understanding of differences and similarities while also giving them a deeper cultural sense of self. Cultural literacy can branch in so many different directions, from people, to art, religion and many more areas.
Here are a list of benefits of being culturally literate! Parents please share with your children!
1) Becoming more globalized-You have a deeper understanding of things and people around you and the world!
2) Becoming more understanding- When you learn about other people and thing different from yourself you become more understanding of those differences.
3) Embracing others differences- This is when you learn to appreciate things that might not be unique (or special to you!)
4) Learn about others- This is always important because we want to make sure we learn about things different from ourselves. Just think, we wouldn't want someone not caring or knowing things about us just because they are different from them
5) Better Communication- We can communicate, interact, and work positively with individuals from other cultural groups.
6) Helps us to Avoid Bad Stereotyping- Having a good cultural diversity helps us to understand the dangers of stereotyping, or judging people before we know them individually, and teaches us the importance of learning about cultural differences (things people do differently from us)
7) Teaches us About Others History- Learning and understanding others history is a great way to start opening your minds to new things that help you build your cultural literacy.
8) Raises Your Awareness- Being culturally literate helps to teach you about sensitive issues regarding different cultures, and group struggles with things like segregation and racism.
